What would you mac hacks recommend? We don't need blazing speed or tons of memory. Don't do any gaming or run memory hog programs.
Will we need to buy new gadgets like router and external hard drive? Are monitors interchangeable between PC and mac?
Currently have an old gateway with AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core at 2.4 ghz with 2 gigs of RAM. Jan's newer HP died after abt 14 months. We'll keep the gateway and network it with whatever we buy.

Not sure what you are saying Liz...do you mean that the PC software I have right now I could in theory install on a Mac?

If your a gamer like me me, stick to a PC, if not, no reason not to go Apple. Though, I'll go without a computer before going Apple for my own reasons.

Stay within your PC world, Shakes. You don't need what Mac excels at. In the Mac world all the items you mentioned are in the computer. I think you'd be wasting your money..however, Macs are more secure than PC's.

Gimpy, that was true 5 years ago. However there's a huge variety of games for Mac now. Once I tried a Mac..the thought of a PC never appealed to me. To each their own.
I'll add this, we have software built into our Mac X SnowLeopard that allows us to open and use most anything our friends with PC's send us.

I absolutely love my iMac. I run WinXP on a completely different partition, so I can choose which Operating system that I would like to boot to. I use Windows about 15 percent of the time. I love the way that Mac OS X "feels."

Since you already have a monitor, you're looking at the Mac Mini or one of the full desktops. The full desktops are much more than you need. The Mac Mini would be fine, and has more than enough horsepower for your use. All macs, including their lowest end one, have separate nVidia graphics chips, so you could grind through more advances graphics processing later on, or see high definition movies without a problem. The next turn of flash has graphics acceleration, so you would also be able to see online HD content without an issue.
The base Mac Mini used to be a great deal, but now it's only a good deal. Remember you have to buy the keyboard and mouse separately. It's only a good deal now because there are some competitors. For example, a Dell Zino may not be as aesthetically pleasing, but it is almost as small, and you can get more performance for a lot less $$. In my opinion, the higher end mac minis aren't worth it because you end up paying a big premium for inexpensive things like RAM and hard drive space, just to get a little bump in processor performance. This is one area where Apple really rips you off.
If you are considering the iMacs even though you already have a monitor, you should wait. These are on a brand new generation cycle, and there have been some serious quality issues that have not yet been resolved.
You should also seriously consider a laptop. The basic MacBook has as much processing power as the Mac Mini. You can find them on sale sometimes, do a search on www.techbargains.com to see the whether it's worth it to wait for a sale. If you know someone who can get an educational discount, you can get one at a great price. Once you experience the portability and convenience of a laptop, you won't go back. There has been a lot of press lately about the death of the desktop.
I have both PCs and Macs, and IMO each has their benefits and drawbacks. I am not zealot of either one, and I have complaints about both systems. I will say that I have been very, very impressed with Windows 7, though even there I have identified some very annoying quirks.
