UPDATE: The surgery went very well as far as doing it and sewing it up( about 3 hours of which 1-1/2 were actual surgery) ..the surgeon said the outside hole was about the size of a quarter but inside was a huge cavity about the size of my fist!! ...The infection had gone down into that ischial bone. He chiseled off what he could of the stuff..I don't know what it looked like or how to describe it. He said that his pelvis also looks bad..and took some samples to find out if he has a severe infection in it or if he just has severe osteoporosis. He said if it's infection a very high risk surgery is needed...so not happy about that..but praying for a miracle!!! So, he'll be there 3-4 weeks for recovery. BTW...Bryan was totally awake for the entire procedure!!! Since he couldn't feel anything..they decided he didn't need to be put under!! So he heard the chisel and all that good stuff. They had him on his tummy too..which was a first since the accident!! He said they had a foam time hole type pillow thing for him to rest his head on and look thru and see a mirror by which they could see his face and so could he!! Pretty amazing actually!
One funny thing..The surgeon WROTE on the side of his butt..DO NOT PULL HERE !! For when someone would be turning him or lifting him so they wouldn't pull the skin in that area and out the sutchers!!
Bryan's doc was Dr. Jeremy Tamir...he did a great job and a number of people had positive comment about him around the hospitals we visited.
I will be praying for you terry with your upcoming surgery..that all would go as well as Bryan's..but that you won't have the bad news with it! :) I'll be spending the weekend with Bry so will be incommunicato for a few days. Take care all and thanks again for your help!:)

Sandy, Bryan's situation sounds very similar to mine except for the possible pelvic involvement. I was 3 wks on the Clinitron in a skilled nursing center due to IV antibiotics then 4 without for turning, PT ,etc. Medicare insisted I be in a facility to cover the bed. At home it would have been around $125/day. I had the value of
100 gr. of protein per day hammered into my brain for proper healing. Ask me anything you want. Paul I

quick update:
I go to work in the a.m. then over to the hospital, spend the nights there sleeping on the floor on a mat in the corner of Bryan's pint sized room, get up in the a.m., shower and get ready there and head the hour drive to work for another day. I had to work this a.m., but normally on the weekends, I go up after work on Fri and spend the weekend with him and start the routine over again Monday a.m.

The doc said Bryan was having diminished lung capacity in his left lung from leaning on that side of his body continuously am/pm so they put him on a little oxygen to mix with room air on the vent...that was 2 days ago..yesterday they said he looks like he's getting some pneumonia...SURPRISE!! DUH!! Didn't see THAT coming!!?? Wondering, as smart as docs are supposed to be..or at least we pay them for...why couldn't they be a little more proactive to head this off before it started??
Bryan had been fighting the docs orders to inflate his trache cuff as he HAS to be on THEIR vent! He feels more comfy when he's deflated and can talk...inflated..no speech and at night he is very uncomfortable and anxious...so 3 nights ago when he finally gave in..they inflated(mainly becuz when he's deflated, the pressure is too low for their vent settings and it makes the alarm go off constantly and at night that is next to insanity!!!!!!!) his cuff and he was so anxious they gave him ativan and morphine by IV and he rested fairly well...2 nights ago they just gave him ativan by IV and he was half awake most of the night and wanting me to stay near to him cuz he was kinda scared and said everything felt "weird"....??:(
Real short night of sleeping :( Last night they gave him an ativan pill and for some reason...that seemed to work somewhat better..I was actually able to get a couple more hours sleep...as was he. I feel I am emotionally and physically drained and can not wait for this to be over and have him back at his house in HIS bed one HIS vent!!!
BTW..I don't think I ever let anyone know that we did not get a Clintron bed..it's just a low air loss bed, mostly like the one he has at home.
Lots more has gone on there since we have been there..but I won't bore you with the details..I sure you can imagine hospital life.
One last thought...before I left him this.a.m. to come to work...(I usually wake him to tell him I am leaving, and he has the RT deflate his trache so he can talk)he was still sleeping and I didn't want to wake him cuz I know how tired he is/has been..so I told the nurses what I was doing and to please watch out for him..and ask to have the RT deflate him. The nurse told me I had to TRUST them! I said..I am sorry..no offense to her personally..but I can not do that! During the last 6 yrs I have witnessed some horrific things done to Bryan...in error ...by mistake...so I can not have that complete trust that the staff ALWAYS has Bryan's best interest at heart! Not sure she sympathized with me...but the other nurse with her did say she would be bringing Bryan his breakfast tray in about 20 mins and that she would tell the RT to deflate him...:) I thanked her!:)

I'm so sorry things are so stressful for you right now, Sandy. I truly hope Byran doesn't go into full blown pneumonia. Hang in there.
